El Retiro Entrance

~~ One of El Retiro's two beautiful entrance posts ~~

El Retiro was built for Harry E.C. Webb.  Mr. Webb and his wife, Frarika (or Frankina, or Franka) were both from Maine, with Mrs. Webb being younger by ten years.

Although the 1920 census shows no occupation for him, Mr. Webb lived in Los Angeles prior to coming to Sierra Madre, and was listed in a Los Angeles city directory as a "canmaker" from 1888, at the age of 27, through to 1891.  For much of the 1890's Harry worked for the Pioneer Roll Paper Company as a bookkeeper, and later a cashier.  He was listed as a salesman at one point, as well.

Interestingly, his 1892 voter registration form listed him as 5'10 1/2", with gray eyes and dark hair.  Seems like Mr. Webb was a handsome fellow!
