A Visit with Carolyn Gravatte

~~ Work in Progress - Click here to see Carolyn with her oil painting, "It's a Good Life" ~~

Yesterday, I was the lucky recipient of what is known as a Wonderful Experience.  As a little background, when I went to the Sierra Madre Art Fair this year, I wanted to buy one of Carolyn Gravatte's prints.  Carolyn, renowned and immensely talented, was the featured artist at last year's Art Fair.  Her art is also featured on the front cover of Michele Zack's book, Southern California Story: Seeking the Better Life in Sierra Madre.

Unfortunately (or so I thought at the time!), by the time I got to Carolyn's booth, they no longer had the combo of print and size that I was looking for.  Carolyn's daughter Laura (also an artist), wrote down my info and said that they would contact me when my print became available.

Fast forward to this week, when I got a call from Carolyn, and headed to her home/studio to pick up my print.  The home, largely built by Carolyn and her husband, is nestled up against the hills, making you feel like you've left the big city (which, in effect, you have), and are enjoying a mini-vacation.

Not only is Carolyn talented, she is a delightful person!  Her warm and lovely home and studio are filled with examples of her creativity.  In fact, she has a very creative family - a lamp made by her husband served as the light for looking at the prints I was choosing.  She patiently showed me many different prints (so many great things to choose from), while we had a wonderful visit.  It was truly an experience to be treasured.

As luck would have it, I ordered another print that Carolyn is going to prepare for me, so I guess I'll have to go back.  Darn...

  5. Oh darn:) Love the colors and I love seeing artists workspaces! One of my friends also paints/creates for a living and I marvel at these artists' talents.

  6. Thanks, friends! It was really amazing. I've never been to an artist's studio - what a treat! Susan, that painting is one of the two that I have to go back to pick up (the print, of course...). I've actually blogged about that house, and have a photo of the same gate to put up one of these days. It's a smaller Greene and Greene house!
