Camellias

Growing in the garden at the Sierra Madre Public Library
February is kind of Camellia Month around here.  Nearby Temple City will hold its annual Camellia Festival on February 23 (many local kids, including yours truly, can boast of having been in the Camellia Parade).  The Huntington Gardens and Descanso Gardens can be counted on to provide stunning displays in their extensive Camellia gardens.  And did you know that tea comes from a variety of the Camellia, called Camellia sinensis??  Neither did I!  Blogging is so educational!

  2. Waaaah!!! I miss our camelias!!! The Descanso camelia grove is absolutely fantastic!!!
My mom had two gorgeous white camelias planted on either side of the front door of the house we grew up in...by the time she went into assisted living, the trees weren't doing well anymore and I think they were removed by the new owners....I miss those trees too!!! (even though I'm a bit tired of all the white around here!!!)

  4. camelias remind me of my grandma...she had so many pretty camelia bushes, or are they trees? anyway, whenever a flower would fall off she would bring it inside and float it in a dish of water. there were always camelias floating on her kitchen table ever since i can remember :) i tried to grow one but killed it :(

  6. It seems like a lot of people have long-term memories of camellias. They really are beautiful, but I didn't appreciaate them nearly as much as I do now, until I took a docent-led tour at The Huntington. Prior to that, I only thought about having to pick up all those blooms as they fell! :)
