Mail Sweet Mail

Here in Sierra Madre, we have only one U.S. Post Office, as well as a couple of private mailbox locations (e.g., Mail Box & Postal, on Sierra Madre Boulevard).  Now, doing my very best imitation of a famous postal employee - Cliff, from Cheers - I'd like to give you a post office fun fact.  As of 2011, the U.S. Post Office had a total of 31,000 post offices.  That's a lot of individual mailboxes to attend to each day.  I'm pretty sure this one is the cutest of them all!

  1. It is darling, Adele. I feel like I am looking at a scene in the mountains somewhere. Terrific that those flowers are surviving the cold weather you are having.

    1. It is kind of in the mountains, LOL! I forgot to mention that it's in the Sierra Madre Canyon, which is very mountainey (not a word...). :) This cold weather has really been something!

  3. That is soo cute! I haven't seen Cheers in ages (haha, I remember the eternal quest to figure out which was the 'real' Cheers bar when I moved to Boston) - when you think of it, the US Postal Service is an amazing institution:)

    1. That's funny! I think they eventually had tours of the "real" one, so they must have come to some kind of a consensus?

  4. Love the mailbox!!! It would look great up here in the mountains except for one thing...it would have to be changed to be a birdhouse because we don't have street delivery...PO Boxes only!!! So much for the postman braving the sleet and snow!!!

  5. We have only. One post officers South Pasadena. The lines are long but the people are sweet.

    1. That's the way ours is. Always a smile, which I would find hard, but they never seem to!

  6. OK, here's my thought about the US Postal Service. I love it. I love that a letter from New York can miraculously appear in the mailbox at my door within a day or two. I love that a human being actually walks to my door to make sure I receive it. The whole concept of door-to-door, personal delivery is mysterious, glorious, even if 90% of what I receive these days are ads and bills. May it never go away.

    1. I wish you would have written this post for me, Hiker. These are my very, identical, exact thoughts on the post office. I always feel in awe of the magic of it, and sometimes worry for its ultimate well-being. Definitely, "May it never go away." Oh, and it makes me nostalgic for my childhood at times. Remember when Zip codes came along, and we met Zippy?
